How Mike Heiligenstein Looks To Solve Traffic Congestion

Traffic congestion is increasingly seen as a major problem in the greater Austin, Texas region. Mike Heiligenstein, the Executive Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) has been focused for the last several years on solving this problem. He has said that one of the key ways to fix this congestion is through the use of innovative technology.

Mike Heiligenstein has said that while the solution is sometimes a new road or additional lanes, that isn’t always the right solution for everywhere. Under his leadership, the CTRMA has built two new toll roads that have relieved congestion in the communities that they serve. One of the toll roads, U.S. 290, tripled the capacity and reduced the number of cars driving on the non-toll lanes. According to Biz Journals, Mike Heiligenstein has also talked about MoPac Express Lanes and how they incorporate new technology that helps ease traffic congestion. The lanes use variable tolling that can be adjusted automatically as traffic dictates in order to keep cars flowing as much as is possible in an area that is growing far faster than traffic infrastructure can handle.

He has also talked about smart roads that will one day allow cars to sync with road infrastructure in order to know what’s happening ahead and alternative routes that are available.

CTRMA is also developing a mobile traffic app along with Metropia. This app will monitor traffic and suggest alternatives to the user in order to get where they are going. They’re also developing another app with Carma which will make carpooling easier and lead to fewer cars on the road.

Mike Heiligenstein was appointed to the CTRMA as its Executive Director when the agency was established in 2003. He has been a public servant for over 30 years, also serving as the Williamson County Commissioner and a City Council Member of Round Rock. He serves on a number of other public boards as well, including the Clean Air Force, the National Association of Counties, and the Austin-San Antonio Corridor Council.

As a nationally recognized transportation expert, Mike Heiligenstein is a sought out speaker that has spoken at conferences across the United States. He believes in taking a regional approach to traffic issues as the best way to mitigate congestion. He attended the University of Texas and graduated with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in government as well as earning an MBA.
