Betsy DeVos and Her Philanthropy Work

Betsy DeVos is an activist and is known for her campaign for education reform. She has done great work in the education sector, especially with her school choice advocacy. Because of this movement, today there are 250,000 students in 33 publicly funded, private choice programs in 17 states and District of Columbia. In last year alone, educational-choice programs for students expanded by 40,000. A few years back, Betsy started the Great Lakes Education Project in Michigan. The aim of this political action committee was to promote education reform by expanding charter schools across the state. The project was successful, and they expanded it nationally as American Federation for Children. There are also several supporters of school choice who work hand in hand with the Alliance for school choice. Follow Betsy DeVos on twitter.com

Betsy pursues reforms through several nonprofit roles. She chairs the Dick and Betsy Family Foundation which she founded with her husband, Dick Devos. Other than the foundation, Betsy has a broad range of charitable interests. She is a member of various local and national boards including, Kids Hope USA, Mars Hill Bible Church, and The DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the Kennedy Center. Betsy is also the chairperson of other charitable institutions such as the Alliance for School Choice and at the American Federation for Children. Betsy and her husband began this charity towards education by supporting individual students. Their passion towards helping needy students grew when they visited the Potter’s House Christian School which had been part of Grand Rapids for many years but with a lot of low-income families. The more they kept visiting the school, the more the desire to help those low-income families grew and the couple still supports the Potter’s House up to date. Later on, Betsy started a foundation that offered scholarships to low-income parents. Betsy ran the program when her husband was on the State Board of Education in Michigan. However, they saw that the scholarships were never going to address the real problem entirely and that’s when she involved herself more with the educational- choice movement.

Currently, Mrs. Betsy DeVos serves as the chairperson of the Windquest Group, a private company that invests in clean energy, technology, and manufacturing. Betsy co-founded Windquest in 1989 together with her husband. Betsy joined politics back in school where she was involved in campus politics. She has led several political action committees, party organizations and campaigns. Betsy DeVos has even served as the chairperson of Michigan Republican Party. Her husband, Dick is also a reformer and politician who served as a nominated Michigan’s Governor under Republican party in 2006. Mrs. DeVos says her greatest success has been in Florida where there is an ever growing number of learners under the school choice program.
